We're Back, But Our Hearts are in Ireland

We returned late last night, tired after running the gauntlet of security at the airport in Shannon, the return at JFK and then boarding our bus back to Maryland. Many of us are back to work today -- rather bleary-eyed and some are sleeping in.

Without question, everyone on the trip loved Ireland and was struck by the humor, generosity and hospitality of the Irish people. Our tour guide, Paul Farrell, was a wonderful ambassador of his country. We all left knowing that we have a good friend in Ireland -- somewhere in Tipperary (and yes, of course, we sang that song with him!).

I find myself thinking in the Irish brough: "Would that be breakfast you'd be wantin' then?"

The lessons in Irish history in many ways were lessons in American history as well. The Irish influence in the United States is huge and understanding them helps to understand our own national character too.

Our hearts are truly there -- in the Emerald Isle -- still. And as Jan said -- "Did we mention the music?" It was grand. Good craic!

I've seen from whence my people came,
And felt its stirring call.
Thanks for this trip to Jan and Kev
And the wonderful tour with Paul.

"Slan go foill" to Ireland*
Where we'll no longer roam.
A piece of my heart I'll leave behind
But the rest I'm taking home.

We have details to fill in to truly document the trip, so if you've been reading along, please come back in a day or two to read about our trip to the Aran Islands, more about Ashford Castle, and other tidbits.

Meanwhile, we will be posting even more photos in the next few days so go back to the Oyster Boys website for more sights.

Thanks for reading along! We were glad to "take you with us," we were indeed.
